WTF Radio System — Content Architecture & Vocabulary
Last updated: 2026-05-21
The retro-audio metaphor is the organizing brand system for everything WTF is AI publishes — the website dial, the short-form series, the podcast, the newsletter, the shareables. Every channel has a name borrowed from the era when women fought their way onto the airwaves.
The three-tier content architecture
Tune In (website) ─┐
│
Boombox (series) ─┤──→ all powered by the same recordings,
│ distributed at different lengths/places
Podcast (long-form) ─┘1. Tune In — the website experience
- The small audio dial in the corner of the site
- Plays the latest Boombox episode when clicked (~2–5 min)
- This is the "doorway" — discovery for new visitors, monthly refresh for returning ones
- UI: small retro radio dial; clicking = "tuning in"
- v2: clicking the dial could open a Boombox modal with the past-episodes archive (channel-surfing the back catalog)
2. Boombox — the short-form series
- Monthly ~2–5 min "audio postcard" about a woman who paved the way
- Sheila reads the historical woman's words in her own voice (dodges copyright, builds brand intimacy)
- Each episode pairs with that month's newsletter / blog essay
- Distributed everywhere:
- On the website via the dial (Tune In)
- On Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc. (full RSS feed)
- As shareable social clips
- Embeddable in email/SMS forwards
- Format differentiator: short-form is underserved in podcasting — fits the SMB owner's "no time to waste" energy
3. The Podcast — the long-form companion
- Longer (15–30 min) deep-dive episodes
- Goes deeper into the same historical women or into adjacent topics (modern women builders, founders, SMB-AI stories)
- Lives on the same podcast host so it appears in the same feed as the Boombox episodes — or split into two feeds depending on positioning preference (decision below)
- The Boombox episode is effectively the "trailer" or "preview" for the long-form essay
Vocabulary glossary
The lexicon. Each term has a single fixed meaning across the brand so copy stays consistent.
| Term | What it means | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| The Dial | The retro radio dial UI on the website — the toggle/player | Floating bottom-right (or wherever lands) on every page |
| Tune In | The action of clicking the dial and engaging with the audio | CTAs: "Tune in this month", "Tune in to October" |
| Radiowaves | Umbrella name for everything audio coming out of WTF is AI | Section heading, archive page title, social bio |
| Boombox | The short-form monthly series itself (the show) | "This month on the Boombox", "Latest Boombox episode" |
| Walkman | Portable/shareable format — clips and forwards meant to travel | Share button labels: "Send to a friend's Walkman", "Pop on your Walkman" |
| Antenna Waves | The newsletter — the signal that lands in your inbox | Newsletter signup: "Catch the Antenna Waves", footer label |
| Surfing | Browsing/exploring the archive — channel-surfing past episodes | Archive nav: "Surf past episodes", "Surf the back catalog" |
| Dial Up | The act of subscribing — turning the dial to receive future signal | Subscribe CTA: "Dial up the signal", "Dial up to subscribe" |
Optional / future:
- Static — the in-between, the noise — could be the "loading" or "between channels" UI state
- Frequency — could be the cadence or theme of a given month/issue ("This month's frequency: builders")
- Signal — what's being broadcast — could be the actual content of any given month
- Off-air — the rare moments WTF is AI is quiet (a sabbatical, a break) — also a copy tool
Content ideas powered by this system
Standing recurring slots
- The Boombox: monthly historical-woman audio postcard (Sheila narrates; rotate guest readers occasionally)
- The Antenna Waves: monthly newsletter — full essay on that month's woman, why she matters to SMB owners now, plus the Boombox audio embedded
- Surf the Archive: searchable/browsable past episodes on the website
Initial Boombox lineup (draft — needs ordering)
- Harriet Tubman — builder, operator, escape-route designer
- Rosalind Franklin — DNA, credit-denied scientist
- Madam C.J. Walker — first U.S. self-made female millionaire (high resonance for SMB owners)
- Ada Lovelace — first computer programmer (ties straight to the AI through-line)
- Bessie Coleman — first Black + Native American woman pilot
- Hedy Lamarr — co-invented frequency-hopping (literally radio-waves history — meta)
- Grace Hopper — invented the first compiler (another AI lineage tie)
- Mary Kenner — sanitary belt + carrier attachment for walkers (inventor whose patents were ignored)
- Stephanie Kwolek — invented Kevlar
- Patsy Mink — first woman of color in U.S. Congress, Title IX author
Cross-promotion
- Each Boombox episode ends with a soft CTA: "Dial up the Antenna Waves for the full story" (push to newsletter)
- Each Antenna Waves issue includes the embedded Boombox audio + a "Surf the archive" link
- Social clips are Walkman-branded so the vocabulary travels off-platform
Distribution mechanics
| Channel | Source | Length | Action verb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website dial | RSS feed (latest episode) | 2–5 min | Tune In |
| Spotify / Apple Podcasts | Podcast host RSS | 2–5 min (Boombox) + 15–30 min (long-form) | Subscribe / Dial Up |
| Newsletter | Manual send, monthly | Embedded Boombox audio + essay | Dial Up |
| Social clips (IG/TikTok/X) | Manual cut from Boombox episode | 30–60 sec | Send to Walkman |
| Email/text shareable | Direct link from website to clip | 30–60 sec | Pop on your Walkman |
Open questions / decisions to make
- One podcast feed or two? Single feed mixing Boombox (short) and long-form makes subscription frictionless. Two feeds is cleaner positioning but doubles distribution work. Recommend single feed at launch, split only if signal volume justifies it.
- Podcast host pick. Buzzsprout (generous free tier, great analytics), Transistor (pro, ~$19/mo), or Substack-with-podcast (free, ties to newsletter directly). Substack is the contender if Antenna Waves also lives there.
- Where does Antenna Waves live? Substack? Beehiiv? Native (Google Apps Script extension of current capture)? Picks determine podcast-host choice.
- The Boombox naming. "The Boombox" alone vs. "WTF Boombox" vs. "Boombox: Women Who Paved the Way." First is cleanest, last is most discoverable in podcast directories.
- Dial position on site. Bottom-right is standard. Could also be tucked into the nav (next to Join the Waitlist).
- First episode launch date — anchors the whole rollout. Ties to when website + waitlist + newsletter all need to be live.
- Voice guest cadence — every episode Sheila, or one guest reader per quarter?
Why this works
- One recording, four channels. The same audio file becomes Tune In, Boombox, Walkman clip, and newsletter embed — production cost stays low.
- Vocabulary doubles as positioning. Every term reinforces the retro-CRT-buzz brand without you having to over-explain.
- The historical women are the long-term moat. Generic AI content is everywhere. "Sheila reads the words of the women who got us here, monthly, in her voice" is a category of one.
- It ladders straight into the product list. The Boombox builds the audience → newsletter nurtures → playbook/course/consulting converts. See wtf-products.md for the funnel ladder.
